Colombian Priest Stabbed to Death

Colombian priest Father Emir Jaramillo Cardenas was killed between December 20 and 21 at his home, located in Santa Rosa de Osos, about 74 km from the city of Medellin. According to some acquaintances of the priest, who was in charge of the Chapel "Our Lord of Humility", Father Jaramillo had not received any death threats. His body was found by a relative who, surprised by the fact that he had not come to the chapel, went looking for him. The door of his apartment was open and, on entering, he found the body of the priest with knife wounds.
The Bishop of the Diocese of Santa Rosa de Osos, Bishop Jairo Jaramillo Monsalve, delivered a statement of his grief for the death of the priest: "The diocese is united with his family by rejecting this barbaric act and praying for his eternal rest," the prelate said.

More than 500 claims filed against NW Jesuits

SPOKANE, Wash. — More than 500 people in the Northwest filed claims against the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus in advance of a November deadline, alleging members of the Catholic order sexually abused them as children.
The Spokesman-Review in Spokane reports the claims against the Jesuits span decades and range from Native Alaskan children to students at Spokane's Gonzaga Preparatory School.
A federal judge overseeing the Chapter 11 reorganization of the province set a Nov. 30 deadline for people to file the claims. The organization includes Jesuits in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. The Jesuits already have settled 200 additional sex-abuse claims

Report: Homosexuality no factor in abusive priests

BALTIMORE — A preliminary report commissioned by the nation's Roman Catholic bishops on the roots of the clergy sex abuse scandal found no evidence that gay priests are more likely than heterosexual clergy to molest children, the lead authors of the study said Tuesday.
The full report by researchers at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice won't be completed until the end of next year. But the authors said that their evidence to date found no data indicating that homosexuality was a predictor of abuse.
"What we are suggesting is that the idea of sexual identity be separated from the problem of sexual abuse," said Margaret Smith of John Jay College, in a speech to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. "At this point, we do not find a connection between homosexual identity and the increased likelihood of subsequent abuse from the data that we have right now."
The question has been raised repeatedly within and outside the church because the overwhelming majority of known victims were boys. As part of the church's response to the crisis, the Vatican ordered a review of all U.S. seminaries that, among other issues, looked for any "evidence of homosexuality" in the schools.
Yet, many experts on sex offenders reject any link between sexual orientation and committing abuse. Karen Terry, a John Jay researcher, said it was important to distinguish between sexual identity and behavior, and to look at who the offender had access to when seeking victims.
The bishops had commissioned the $2 million study as part of widespread reforms they enacted at the height of the abuse crisis. The scandal erupted in 2002 with the case of one predator priest in the Archdiocese of Boston, then spread to every U.S. diocese and beyond.
Nearly 14,000 molestation claims have been filed against Catholic clergy since 1950, according to tallies the bishops have released in recent years. Abuse-related costs have reached at least $2.3 billion in the same period.
At the meeting Tuesday, Bishop Edward Braxton, of the Diocese of Belleville, Ill., asked the researchers whether their study indicated that homosexuality should be considered when evaluating a candidate for the priesthood. In 2005, the Vatican issued a policy statement that men with "deep-seated" attraction to other men should be barred from the priesthood.
Smith said: "If that exclusion were based on the fact that that person would be more probable than any other candidate to abuse, we do not find that at this time."
The latest findings affirmed previous reports that the rate of clergy abuse has declined steeply since the mid 1980s. Researchers found that the abuse rate peaked in the 1960s and 1970s. Most of the claims being made now involve allegations from decades ago.

Irish Church accused of abuse cover-up - BIG SURPRISE, NOT!

A damning report into child abuse in the Dublin archdiocese has criticised the Catholic Church hierarchy for covering up the abuse.
The report investigated how Church and state authorities handled allegations of child abuse against 46 priests. It found that the Church placed its own reputation above the protection of children in its care.
It also said that state authorities facilitated the cover-up by allowing the Church to operate outside the law. Reacting to the report, the current Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin said "no words of apology would ever be sufficient" and offered "to each and every survivor my apology, sorrow and shame".
The "Report of the Commission of Investigation into the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin" covered a period from 1975 to 2004. It has laid bare a culture of concealment where church leaders prioritised the protection of their own institution above that of vulnerable children in their care.

Nun Found Murdered in her home - GOD HATES CATHOLICS!!
NAVAJO, New Mexico - "A nun has been found dead in her residence at a church in a small community on the Navajo Indian reservation near the Arizona-New Mexico border, the FBI said.
Sister Marguerite Bartz, 64, failed to show up at Sunday Mass and a colleague who went to check on her discovered her body. Investigators believe Bartz was killed sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning, but FBI Special Agent Darrin Jones said he could not disclose any details about how she died.
The FBI and state police were searching her residence for any clues.
Authorities and officials with the Diocese of Gallup, which oversees the parish in Navajo, said they were not sure whether Bartz or the church were the target, or if the attack was a random act.
Authorities were also searching for Bartz's vehicle, a beige 2005 Honda CR-V with a New Jersey license plate, and asking anyone who spoke to Bartz on Saturday night to contact investigators.
Bartz was one of more than a dozen Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament who are currently ministering within the Diocese of Gallup, which spans 55,000 square miles in New Mexico and Arizona.
'Passionate'
The diocese said Bartz was born in Plymouth, Wisconsin, in 1945. She entered the order in 1966 from Beaumont, Texas, and professed final vows in 1974. She had ministered in Massachusetts, Louisiana and in several communities around New Mexico before ending up at St. Berard in 1999.
The diocese said there is usually another sister who lives at the residence with Bartz, but she was out of the state at a meeting and Bartz was alone.
"She was known to be a woman always passionate for justice and peace, and the life she lived would tell us that she would respond to this incident with a spirit of forgiveness towards whoever is responsible for these acts," the diocese said in a statement released Monday."

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Delaware's Catholic Diocese of Wilmington filed for federal bankruptcy protection on Sunday night, on the eve of a civil trial in a high-profile sex abuse case against the diocese and a former priest. . . .
The diocese covers Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland and serves about 230,000 Catholics. . . . Thomas Neuberger, an attorney representing 88 alleged victims, described the bankruptcy filing as a "desperate effort to hide the truth from the public and conceal the thousands of pages of scandalous documents" from being made public in court. "This filing is the latest, sad chapter in the diocese's decades long 'cover-up' of these despicable crimes, to maintain the secrecy surrounding its responsibility and complicity in the sexual abuse of hundreds of Catholic children," Neuberger said in a statement.
The Diocese of Wilmington is the seventh U.S. Catholic diocese to seek Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection since the church abuse scandal erupted seven years ago in the Archdiocese of Boston. Dioceses in Davenport, Iowa; Fairbanks, Alaska; Portland, Ore.; San Diego; Spokane, Wash., and Tucson, Ariz., also sought bankruptcy protection.
More than 20 Delaware plaintiffs have filed lawsuits against former priest Francis DeLuca. DeLuca served for 35 years but was defrocked last summer after having been jailed in 2007 in New York for repeatedly molesting his grandnephew. . . .
The diocese has paid more than $6.2 million since 2002 to settle sexual abuse lawsuits. Like others around the country, it also has paid settlements to alleged victims who did not file lawsuits..

Patron Saint of AIDS/HIV To Be Canonized

The very notion of a Roman Catholic patron saint of AIDS/HIV seems paradoxical. Pope Benedict XVI, in his former life as Cardinal Ratzinger (and prefect of the Doctrinal Congregation) was known for his 1988 Letter on “The Many Faces of AIDS,” in which rejection of condom usage was a key point; the Church’s active rejection of safe—or safer—sex was (and is), of course, centrally important in the American experience of AIDS. Indeed, such views have global significance given that Catholicism offered (and offers) much of the social and health infrastructure across significant portions of Africa. To reject widely recognized prevention strategies, not to mention contraception, places lives at risk.
That was then, this is now, you say? No. In his current role, Pope Benedict’s views remain deeply problematic. And yet, on October 11, 2009, the Catholic Church, led by this same Pope Benedict, will canonize a man some have called the patron saint of people with AIDS/HIV. In this, the Church both avoids its own horrifying history and brings closer those many men and women who are Catholic and yet refuse to follow the hierarchy into some of its excesses. Those, that is, who are not only not homophobic or sexist, but actively work to claim the Church as their own just Church (like the women and men of ACT UP in the late 1980s who argued they WERE the church). Not my view, as a secular person, but certainly the other side of the paradox of a church that canonizes (and ministers) while reviling.
Who is this surprising saint? Father Damien de Veuster (1840-1889), also known as the Blessed Damien of Molokai (an island in Hawaii). The patron saint of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu and Hawaii, Damien was a Belgian priest of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, known for his missionary work with lepers beginning in 1873. He himself eventually died from Hansen’s disease, known then as leprosy. During his lifetime, some vilified Damien for his association with persons who suffered from a disease seen as the result of undue sexual licentiousness on the part of Hawaiians. (He was defended by Robert Louis Stevenson from claims of his unworthiness in 1890.)
We have, of course, come to understand Hansen’s disease, and colonial attitudes towards indigenous peoples such as Hawaiians, (we hope) in new ways. So, too, have we many moved beyond the Protestant anti-Catholicism, to which some of the contemporary criticism of Father Damien has been attributed. Pope Paul VI recognized Damien as “venerable” in 1977, and John Paul II beatified him in 1995. At the latter ceremony, the Belgian people returned a relic, the right hand of Father Damien, to Molokai. (His heel, though, will be shown at a church in Detroit shortly after the canonization, and in San Francisco thereafter.)
Today, there are institutions organized to address AIDS/HIV that are named after the Belgian missionary, including Damien Ministries. Indeed, Damien Ministries is celebrating its 20th year of caring for persons with AIDS/HIV.
And, what some claim to be the world’s only Roman Catholic chapel memorializing persons who have died from HIV/AIDS, at Montreal’s Eglise Saint-Pierre-Apotre, is consecrated to this same soon-to-be saint. (An Episcopal memorial chapel is also named for him.)
Father Damien’s canonization will occur October 11 at a ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square. As the Catholic World Service has noted, eleven lepers and nine Boy Scouts from the Saint Damien Boy Scouts of Oahu will be in attendance. (Yes, paradox arises yet again: lepers and a boys from a notably homophobic organization). So, canonization. On the one hand, critiques of the use of leprosy as an analogy for HIV/AIDS, beginning at least as early as Susan Sontag’s influential work, AIDS and Its Metaphors; and on the other, increasingly literal links between the two diseases, including evidence of leprosy itself as an opportunistic infection associated with AIDS and a connection between “AIDS drugs” and leprosy.
On the one hand, decades of caring for people with AIDS and HIV. On the other hand, ringing words not of canonization but of the exclusion of many, many, people. On the one hand, a history of stigma and confusing of disease with identity; on the other hand, human rights. On the one hand, the use of biblical argumentation about leprosy to direct those who take that text seriously to treat persons with AIDS humanely—and of the parallel to improve the situation of people who too often say they are “tired of being treated like a leper” (as a doctor early in the pandemic reported in his article entitled “When Fear Conquers: A Doctor Learns About AIDS from Leprosy”).

Catholic Priest Pleads Guilty to 29 Sex Offences - July 8, 2009

A New South Wales Catholic priest has pleaded guilty to molesting dozens of boys on separate occasions in the 1970s and 80s.
John Sidney Denham was originally charged with 134 child sex offences relating to 39 boys in Sydney, Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and the state's mid-north coast.
Today he pleaded guilty to 29 offences, with the bulk of the other charges withdrawn.
Most of the victims were molested while they were students at St Pius X High School at Adamstown in Newcastle.
Denham was charged by Strikeforce Georgiana, which has laid more than 170 charges against three priests and another member of the clergy over the past year.
The other priests are still awaiting trial. Denham will be sentenced later this month.
Now-dead priest accused of molesting 2 minors - Sept., 2008
FORT WORTH, Texas — Two more people have come forward accusing a now-dead priest of molesting them about 30 years ago, the Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth announced Monday.
The accusations were made after the diocese announced last week that the Rev. Francis A. Zimmerer had recently been accused of sexually abusing an 11-year-old boy in 1978 at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Decatur.
The diocese said it has offered counseling to that victim, who lives out of state and is now 42.
The two other people said they were abused on separate occasions while Zimmerer served as the parish administrator of the same Decatur church from 1975-81. Both victims were minors at the time.
Before working in Decatur, Zimmerer worked in the Catholic Diocese of Dallas when Fort Worth was part of that diocese. He left Decatur in 1981, returned to the Benedictine Order based in Subiaco, Ark., and died in 1983.
The Fort Worth diocese believes the accusations are credible and has offered counseling to the other two victims as well, officials said

“Deliver Us from Evil” is a documentary about a pedophile priest, Oliver O’Grady, who spent 30 years of his life serving the Catholic Church as well as raping children as young as 9 months old, both male and female. O’Grady never once denied these accusations and as a matter of fact, he plainly said that the Catholic Church covered up his monstrous sin. Those involved with hiding this sin from the general population included Cardinal Roger Mahoney (Archbishop of Los Angeles, CA) and now Pope Benedict XVI. That’s right boys and girls that man that you hold to such high-esteem not only covered up the sins of this pedophile…he played a part in NOT removing him from those children.
When you claim to serve God, you are required to uphold His standard. It is a curse to have even ONE pedophile priest. Get that through your heads…30 years is WAY too long to allow a man to rape babies. The Catholic Church is cursed…the grace of God has departed from that cesspool and this documentary portrays that well.
