WELLINGTON, New Zealand—New Zealand's Roman Catholic Church said Thursday it is investigating five new complaints of sexual abuse of children from at least 20 years ago.
The revelation of fresh inquiries comes as the church worldwide is rocked by allegations of child sex crimes committed by clergy—and days after New Zealand Roman Catholic Archbishop John Dew said the allegations have placed the church in crisis.
Former Police Commissioner John Jamieson said he was investigating the five new historic sex abuse allegations against Catholic Church members in New Zealand.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Supporters of gay marriage have called for Nebraska to join the few states that have legalized the unions.
A rally was held Saturday at the midpoint of a pedestrian bridge over the Missouri River linking Iowa and Nebraska. Participants celebrated last April's Iowa Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage in that state and called for Nebraska to follow suit.
Susie Brenner and Linda Beckstead of Omaha were among 101 gay couples married in Iowa last year. Brenner says it's time for Nebraska to recognize their marriage and give them the same benefits of other married couples.

Since my very first boyfriend is now a priest of the Archdiocese of Omaha, I hope that the church will join its voice in supporting equality for gays in marriage, or at the very least, keep their hypocritical mouths shut. A broomstick-wielding former mental patient charged the altar at a Roman Catholic cathedral in Munster, Germany, on Sunday, knocking the church's Easter candle to the ground before the congregation subdued him, police said. The incident occurred as Munster Bishop Felix Genn and other clergy were starting services in the city's 13th-century cathedral. The 44-year-old suspect was "unresponsive" after his arrest, according to a police statement, and his motive was unclear.
"Whether or not an attack upon the bishop was planned is, with our information at this point, speculative," the police statement read. "At this time, aside from the circumstance that he turned to the bishop after the attack on the Easter candle, there is no objective indication that representatives of the church or attendees were to be attacked."

Levada Brought Back Accused Priest With Conditions

PORTLAND, Ore.—A top Vatican official who now oversees the office that handles cases of alleged abuse by priests once returned an accused priest to administrative duty in Oregon on the condition that he be barred from direct contact with children or teenagers.
As archbishop in Portland from 1986 to 1995, Cardinal William Levada removed Father Joseph Baccellieri in 1992 after learning about 20-year-old complaints involving teenage boys but allowed him to return on a limited basis under close supervision in 1994.
The move had conditions, according to a letter released Saturday in defense of Levada. The archdiocese's clergy personnel director outlined a plan approved by Levada that prohibited Baccellieri from having contact with children or teenagers.

The abuse cases of two priests in Arizona have cast further doubt on the Catholic church's insistence that Pope Benedict XVI played no role in shielding pedophiles before he became pope.
Documents reviewed by The Associated Press show that as a Vatican cardinal, the future pope took over the abuse case of the Rev. Michael Teta of Tucson, Ariz., then let it languish at the Vatican for years despite repeated pleas from the bishop for the man to be removed from the priesthood.
In another Tucson case, that of Msgr. Robert Trupia, the bishop wrote to then-Cardinal Ratzinger, who would become pope in 2005. Bishop Manuel Moreno called Trupia "a major risk factor to the children, adolescents and adults that he many have contact with." There is no indication in the case files that Ratzinger responded.

The revelation came as the Irish Independent has learnt that the same archive will be used to support a flood of civil damages claims once a state-ordered probe into alleged clerical abuses in Dublin and Cloyne is published.
The archive contains stunning data -- recorded in meticulous detail -- on abuse allegations dating over several years, related correspondence, clerical responses and the diocesan handling of the individual complaints. Gardai were, at the time, unaware of significant data in the file.

Trial Set For Retired Priest Accused Of Child Sex Abuse
A Sept. 28 trial date has been set for a retired priest removed from his position in the Catholic Church after allegations of child sexual abuse in the mid-1970s surfaced. During a pretrial conference Friday in Frederick County Circuit Court, Thomas Roy Bevan, 73, of Cascade, waived his right to a trial within 180 days of being charged. On Jan. 22, a Frederick County grand jury indicted Bevan on two counts of child abuse by a custodian. If convicted, Bevan could be ordered to serve as much as 15 years in prison for each of the offenses. Bevan has denied the allegations.

As the Vatican announced Friday that Pope Benedict XVI has signed a pastoral letter about Ireland's abusive priests, it became increasingly clear that the church abuse crisis has entered a new international phase, with allegations spreading across a half dozen countries -- including the pope's native Germany.
"Now we have obvious confirmation that this is a global crisis," said John Allen, CNN's Vatican analyst and senior correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter. "Anywhere there is a substantial Catholic population there is the potential for this type of scandal."

"I was taken down these stairs. I only had a nightdress on. It was pulled over my head. I was left naked. Australian Priest Charged with Kidnapping & Sexually Assaulting Young Girl

ADELAIDE — A NORTHERN suburbs priest will stand trial after denying allegations he kidnapped a young girl and "compelled" her to perform sex acts for his amusement.
The man, who cannot be identified, made a brief appearance in the District Court this morning. He pleaded not guilty to one count of kidnapping, two counts of indecent assault and one count of compelling an act of sexual manipulation. Prosecutors have alleged the man abducted the girl - whose identity is suppressed - at Modbury in July 2009. He is alleged to have assaulted and indecently assaulted her, and also to have forced her to perform a sex act upon herself while he watched. The man was remanded on continuing bail to appear in court again next month.

The new wave of sex abuse allegations currently plaguing the Catholic Church has reached Switzerland. A Swiss abbot said victims, not the church, should be the ones to press charges.
The Catholic Church in Switzerland is investigating sixty claims of sexual abuse by priests, the Swiss news agency SDA reported.
Abbot Martin Werlen of the Benedictine Abbey of Einsiedeln told the newspaper Mittelland-Zeitung that the church is looking into the claims. The church itself will not press charges, Werlen emphasized, and intends to advise victims to do so themselves.
"We find it important that the victim himself determines what steps to take," the cleric told the Mittelland-Zeitung, cited by the Swiss news agency.

ROME - Sex abuse scandals in the Roman Catholic Church are proof that that "the Devil is at work inside the Vatican", according to the Holy See's chief exorcist.
Father Gabriele Amorth, 85, who has been the Vatican's chief exorcist for 25 years and says he has dealt with 70,000 cases of demonic possession, said that the consequences of satanic infiltration included power struggles at the Vatican as well as "cardinals who do not believe in Jesus, and bishops who are linked to the Demon".

Dutch Catholics Come Forward With Reports of Abuse

German Church Faces Child Abuse Charges

BERLIN — The Roman Catholic Church faces yet another child abuse scandal, this time in Pope Benedict XVI’s native Germany.
The widening public scandal began last month with allegations that three priests at the elite Canisius Jesuit high school in Berlin had sexually abused students in the 1970s and ’80s. In the midst of a steadily growing uproar over the handling of that case, the German magazine Der Spiegel published an article last weekend that said nearly 100 clerics and laypeople had been suspected of abusing children and teenagers nationwide since 1995.
The rector of Aloisiuskolleg, a high school in Bad Godesberg, an affluent neighborhood in the former capital of Bonn where diplomats and leading politicians lived, resigned Monday over accusations that he was aware of sexual misconduct by teachers at the school. And on Tuesday a local newspaper, the Aachener Zeitung, reported new accusations of sexual abuse against two priests in the diocese in Aachen.
“The subject of sexual abuse will be a topic at the plenary meeting of the German Bishops’ Conference,” said Nina Schmedding, a spokeswoman for the group, on Tuesday.
Many of the cases now coming to light are unlikely to be prosecuted because the statute of limitations requires crimes to be reported within 10 years of the victim’s 18th birthday. But the revelations have driven an open debate here on the church, its policies for dealing with abuse cases — or, critics say, covering them up — and even the vows of celibacy taken by priests.
Germany is home to roughly 25.2 million Catholics, according to the German Bishops’ Conference, but that number has fallen by more than three million since German reunification in 1990.
The abuse of children by members of the clergy remains one of the most difficult issues for the church. In December the Vatican accepted the resignations of several Irish bishops after a report by the Irish government detailed the physical, sexual and emotional abuse of children by Catholic priests in church-run residential schools, many of them run by the Christian Brothers.

Santo Domingo - Archbishop of Santo Domingo, Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez, has firmly rejected the idea that the tragedy in Haiti was a punishment from God, as some have claimed.
In an exclusive interview with Catholic News Agency, Cardinal Lopez Rodriguez “emphatically” rejected the thought that God willed the January 12 earthquake as a punishment, as some reporters had suggested in recent questions to the cardinal.
“I have always maintained that God is a God of love. God can permit this in order to shake the consciences of insensitive people who see so many in need but do nothing,” he explained. “We are helping many people while others have washed their hands of this,” the cardinal continued. For this reason, he said, “I emphatically reject the idea that this is a punishment from God. How can God be pleased with the deaths of so many? I completely reject that, and besides, theologically that cannot be explained.”
Cardinal Lopez Rodriguez said these kinds of disasters, like the tsunami that struck Indonesia in 2004, also have their origin in man’s sin. In response, “Christian men and women must have hope.”
After expressing his sorrow over the tragic situation in Haiti, the cardinal called for “absolute solidarity” from all countries, “including the United States and Canada,” as the Dominican Republic is not capable of responding to this emergency alone. Catholic Priest Charged with Sexually Abusing 3 Girls

SANTIAGO, Chile — A Catholic priest and his girlfriend are accused of soliciting sex from young girls, including one who later bore his child, investigators said Wednesday.
The Rev. Ricardo Munoz Quinteros, 55, found the youths with the help of his girlfriend, Pamela Ampuero, who photographed the minors and sent him the pictures over the Internet, investigator Jaime Graffigna said. Munoz offered his victims up to $90 to be with him, Graffigna alleged. The priest stayed silent as he was led from jail to the courthouse Wednesday. The public defender assigned to his case entered a plea of not guilty.
The Catholic bishop in Melipilla, Enrique Troncoso, said he was shocked by the report and promised to open an investigation. Munoz was suspended from his duties as a priest. The priest has been charged with abusing three girls, ages 14, 16, and 17, Graffigna said. Ampuero, 33, the mother of two children fathered by Munoz, has been charged with peddling the sexual services of minors, Graffigna said.
